Sinkhole in Sunnyside threatens two homes

SUNNYSIDE (FOX 26) - There is a monster lurking on the other side of Diane Walker's fence and the monster is hungry. It's eaten part of her fence, her neighbor’s fence and a barrier placed by the city.

"It's devastating . Every morning I'm looking out here to see if my storage house has gone in this hole or if the hole has gotten bigger." she says.

The hole started forming along the easement behind her Peacock Drive home in June. The city came out and took measurements and ran a camera through the storm drain.. But Walker says she's seen no activity since.  She says she's called just about everyone she can think of..

"Don't keep telling me it's someone else. It's on the wrong desk. It's one thing or another it makes no sense."

She believes it's even causing plumbing problems in her house.

She's even enlisted the help of community activist Sandra Massie Hines. She thinks she knows how it formed and who's to blame. 

"We're looking at a huge city storm drain right here. I believe that has a lot to do with it. The water flows in and out of it through here from the neighborhood." says Hines

She may have a point. There is a storm drain out in front of her house along the property line. there is also a drain that empties into Sims Bayou that has a large pile of dirt in front of it. The sink hole sits directly in between them.  Regardless of the cause, Walker just wants it gone before her yard and maybe even house are too.

"I just want something to be done about it.. someone to take responsibility about it."

The city is doing something about it. A spokesperson for the Public Works Department says the engineering plans have been approved for a fix. Next they have to figure out how to execute that plan. He did not give a timeline as to when work will actually begin.
