Shoppers head to local stores for tax free weekend

Stores around Houston this weekend are crowded with folks looking to buy school supplies, tax free.

"We are taking advantage of it, we knew we were going to get some significant discounts which is why we decided to come out on a Saturday", says Julie Kinzelman.

Target has an entire school section set up where you can find everything from pens to backpacks.

Mia Tribble is entering the 5th grade and wanted to pick up a disco ball for her first locker. She says, "you can put it on top of your locker and I think there is a switch so the lights on top turn on and it spins around"

While some are out getting items for class, others are just cashing in on the deals. Like Academy where shoes are buy one pair, get the second half off this weekend. Academy managers say about 90% percent of apparel is tax free, even Astros jerseys.

The state law allows most clothing, footwear and school supplies to be tax free, as long as an individual item is under $100 dollars.

"The state is allowing you to purchase items up to $100 dollars, that's not a total purchase, that's each individual item can not exceed $100", says Academy store director Patrick McKee.
