HOUSTON (FOX 26) - As the candlelight vigil for 13-year-old Kenniec Smith was wrapping up Sunday night another drive-by shooting happened in the 1200 block of Ashford River police say.
Less than 10 shots were fired and no one was hit.
"I'm just lost for words," said Cheryl Short. "It just feels like a nightmare to me and I haven't woke up yet."
Smith didn't live with Short, but was like a member of the family.
Like most weekends, Smith was at Short's southwest side home.
"Sweet, sweet girl. I loved her like she was one of my own," Short said.
Smith and other teens were preparing to go to a movie Saturday night.
Police say they were standing in the driveway when an 18-year-old man drove by in a gray Honda Accord and opened fire.
"Everybody pretty much heard the gunfire so everybody was coming outside," said next door neighbor Chauntel Randle. "I saw the young lady on the pavement at the end of the driveway and a lot of kids around her screaming and crying."
This 17-year-old who was shot in the foot says he was the gunman's intended target.
He says he dated a girl who is now dating the 18-year-old gunman and that's what prompted the gunfire.
Smith's mother and grandmother were too distraught to talk to the media.
Friends and relatives describe the teen as sweet and fun-loving and say she will be missed.
