Schools advance in Final Four Literacy Competition

Browning Elementary, Carrillo Elementary, Dogan Elementary and Janowski Elementary all advanced to the final rounds of the Read to the Final Four bracket competition literacy contest.

Friday, nearly 800 third grade students participated in the competition's literacy pep rally where the advancing schools were announced.

Students were greeted to a fun-filled morning with entertainment from  a University of Houston scientist and UH cheerleaders.

The pep rally was hosted by HISD, NCAA Men's Final Four and University of Houston.

The competition began with 68 schools last fall.

Schools advanced in the bracket competition by having the highest number of minutes read by students. These are documented on reading logs submitted every six weeks.

At the completion of the last round, close to three million minutes had been logged.

To help facilitate reading, the Houston Public Library provided each student with a free library card that allows students access to all Houston-area libraries and digital learning resources.

Additionally, the top reader from each of the 68 schools received a bicycle from CYCLE at the end of the competition.

This program is a partnership between the 2016 NCAA® Men's Final Four® Local Organizing Committee,NCAA® Team Works, HISD, Houston Public Library and CYCLE.

The Champion school of the Read to the Final Four program will be announced at Reese's® Final Four Friday® on Friday, April 1, 2016.
