Salvation Army hosts Christmas dinner

Every year, the Salvation Army of Greater Houston serves a Christmas feast to those that have nowhere else to go.

Ashley Carty, who decided to spend her holiday volunteering, says, "It's really the reason for the season, to give back and to see the smiles on everyone’s face."

Guests could stop by either the Harbor Light Center or the Family Residence for turkey, the usual fixings and dessert.

"It means a lot to me, my family, we've been actually doing this for three years and like I said, it's just really nice to go out and it just gives you a warm feeling, to just see those smiles on their faces to get a hot plate on Christmas day," says Carty.

On Thanksgiving, the two locations served more than 1,100 meals and more than 200 people volunteered.

"I think back to where I came from and where I was at a time in my life and it was given to me and I believe in the scripture so strongly, is that in order for me to keep what God has given me, I've got to give it away to others", says Jerome Lacy who is a member of the Harbor Light Corps choir.

Carty says spending time with her family volunteering, is what she loves most about the holiday known for giving.

"They don't have meals everyday and you taken things for granted that you don't have so while you're home opening all those presents there's somebody that doesn't have anything to eat so it's really rewarding to be here," says Carty.
