Rosharon flooding causes prison unit evacuation

With the rising Brazos River levels and rain projected to fall in southeast Texas for a few more days, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice has evacuated the Ramsey prison unit in Rosharon. Almost 1,700 prisoners, along with correctional officers and other staff, boarded TDCJ buses on Friday morning and will be transferred to other units in east Texas that have available beds and capacity.
The Ramsey Unit evacuation means visitation will be canceled there on Saturday and Sunday. The transferred inmates will also not be available for visits at the other units but will have the ability to access the offender telephone system.
An emergency command center was activated in Huntsville on Sunday and is operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Additional food and water has been delivered to the prison units where the inmates have been transferred. Sandbags have been placed to fill and affected prison units. Medical staff will be available to provide care to inmates with special needs while additional staff has been contacted to help affected units.
Families of inmates may contact the TDCJ 24-hour hotline by phone at 936-437-4927 to obtain information about offenders.
