HOUSTON (FOX 26)
Police were in hot pursuit of the getaway car, a stolen black Mercedes. SkyFox was in hot pursuit of the police and Mike Jenning was watching it on Fox26 when the pursuit turned onto his street.
"That was exciting to see it on TV and look out and see it outside your front door. The same street you are living on."
It all began about thirty minutes earlier when two armed men stormed into the Amegy Bank on Bissonnet and Bellaire. A terrified employee called 9-1-1. It went from heist to hot pursuit.
"These were people who didn't care about the public. They were going to do what they could to get away and harm whomever they could in the process.” said HPD Capt. Satterwhite.
That's no exaggeration. They tore up the Southwest Freeway. They hopped from freeway to freeway before getting off onto the surface streets. They blew through stop signs and hit other vehicles. But, their luck began to run out; a blown tire began smoking, a pickup truck blocked them briefly, the sparks flew as they rode on rims. Their run was over, almost, the driver hopped out and tried to steal another car with a handicapped man still inside. His son fought back and held him until police arrived.
"Heroic action by that citizen and we really appreciate that and we told him as much." said Satterwhite.
Police say they tossed money bags away during the run, but they still had one inside the car. A nearby elementary school was briefly on lockdown until police were sure they had everyone in custody and the second arrest didn't take long.
"I was shocked to look out the window and see that happen. I couldn't believe it was in front of you like an eyewitness and see it all happen”, said Jennings.
