Recruiting Texas truck drivers to help report human trafficking

Texas has the second highest rate of human trafficking rates in the nation. Houston is reputed to be one of the largest trafficking hubs in the country.   A local lawmaker, Senator Sylvia Garcia is offering a solution to the problem, recruiting the help of truck drivers.

Firefighters and cab drivers would also assist HPD in the fight.  Senator Garcia will hold a press conference later today to talk about her filing of legislation. This legislation wil make it tmandatory for those applying for a commercial driver's license in Texas to undergo training in identifying and reporting human trafficking. One of the main reasons human trafficking is a big issue for us in Houston is because of the i-10 corridor between El Paso and Houston.

The I-10 corridor a major route that's used by human traffickers. with nearly 200,000 truck drivers in the state.  She believes they can act as the eyes and ears at Truck stops and motels and other places where victims are often exploited on a daily basis. Senator Garcia says we need to pitch in and help where we can to help fight this epidemic and feels this plan will empower truck drivers to save lives.
