GALVESTON, Texas (FOX 26) - Galveston police say a driver who appeared to be racing with another vehicle hit three police motorcycles after losing control of his car.
Galveston police officers and two DPS troopers were running radar and checking for speeders in the 5000 block of Ave O around 1 p.m. Tuesday. Police say the officer's motorcycles were parked on the street next to the curb, and the officers were standing next to the motorcycles.
According to police, the officers saw two vehicles leave a stoplight at 45th Street and appeared to be racing each other down Avenue O. Police say an officer clocked the vehicles' speed at 78 mph. Police say one of the vehicle turned on 50th Street before reaching the officers, but the other driver saw the officers, slammed on his breaks, losing control of the vehicle and veering directly toward the officers.
Police say the officers were able to dive out of the way at the last second, but the vehicle struck the motorcycles, coming to rest on top of them.
Police identified the suspected driver as 18-year-old Melvin Valle of Galveston. Police say none of the officers were injured, but Valle was taken to the hospital with minor injuries to his arm. According to GPD, Valle, upon his discharge from the hospital, will be taken into custody for racing and reckless driving with a $10,000 bond.
