Police investigate Texas State University student death

The San Marcos Police Department is investigating after a Texas State University student died at the Millennium Apartments.

According to the City of San Marcos, police received a call around 11:35 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 13 about a person not breathing at the apartment complex located at 1651 Post Road. When officers and EMS arrived on scene they found 20-year-old Matthew McKinley Ellis unresponsive. Ellis was pronounced dead on the scene after EMS was unable to revive him.

According to Texas State University President Denise Trauth, Ellis was a pledge at the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. Police say the initial investigation indicates alcohol may have been a factor in his death.

Trauth released a statement on Tuesday suspending all activities of Greek fraternities and sororities at the university. Trauth said the chapters aren't allowed to hold new-member events, chapter meetings, social functions and philanthropic activities. She said the suspension will remain until a "thorough review of the Greek Affairs system is completed."

The investigation is still ongoing.
