The California NAACP is petitioning lawmakers to make the "Star-Spangled Banner" is no longer our national anthem. They're calling it one of the most racist songs in the American lexicon. It's because of these lyrics that are in a part of the poem that we don't sing out loud: "no refuge could save / the hireling and slave / from the terror of flight / or the gloom of the grave."
