Patients from the Virgin Islands are arriving at Dobbins Air Reserve Base Wednesday night, fleeing the devastation left behind by Hurricane Maria. Dobbins is an important hub for hurricane relief efforts.

Medical professionals said they have received four cargo planes full of patients Wednesday and they are expecting more.

A man from Saint Croix describes what it was like before he was brought to Georgia.

"My place wasn't damaged badly. In a day or two, I got help. Things were moving on Saint Croix, the roads were being cleared, and the people are looking after a tarp on their building."

A nurse working at Dobbins said each patient will be examined before determining where they will go for treatment.

Patients from Puerto Rico are expected to come in starting Thursday.
