PEARLAND, Texas - A Houston pilot is dead tonight after his plane crashed down at Pearland Regional Airport.
The accident happened around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday off County Road 124 and County Road 127 near the airport.
Preliminary information from the Texas Department of Public Safety and Federal Aviation Administration indicates that an experimental category Wittman Tailwind aircraft crashed upon take-off.
Witnesses told officials that they saw the plane take off, then take an odd turn before nose diving into the ground.
Officials identified the pilot as 36-year old Jared Baxter Ryan of Houston. Officials tell us the pilot was newly licensed and apparently just purchased the plane today, but a man who drove by and said he knew Ryan told us his FAA certificate is dated 2011.
FAA investigators should arrive soon. The NTSB will be in charge of the investigation.
