Man shot by officer in Alvin pronounced dead at the hospital

The Alvin Police Department says a man shot by an officer outside a church was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The officer-involved shooting occurred in the 2000 block of West Lang Street on Sunday afternoon.

Police say the shooting was connected to an earlier disturbance at a residence in the 500 block of N. Fifth Street. Officers went to the residence at around 4 p.m. in response to a call reporting the man was suicidal and had fired a shot in the home.

Police say officers arriving on the scene found the man had fled on a motorcycle with a firearm, but officers soon located the motorcycle at the church on West Lang Street.

According to Alvin PD, the man emerged from a nearby wooded area with the gun and officers gave repeated instructions for him to put the gun down. Police say the suspect finally put the weapon on the ground, but then suddenly retrieved the gun and brought it back up as the officers moved in on him.

The police department says one officer fired on the suspect and the officers began immediate treatment of the victim until EMS arrived. The man was taken to the hospital. Police say the man was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office and the Brazoria County District Attorney’s Office are also investigating.
