17-year-old charged with murder of man responding to Backpage ad

A 17-year-old has been charged with murder after a man who responded to a sexually oriented ad on the Backpage website was shot and killed in his pickup truck, according to police.

According to the Austin Police Department, police officers were called out to the 2500 block of Anken Drive shortly after 1 am on Sunday, July 9, 2017. When officers arrived on scene, they found a victim with obvious trauma.

The victim was identified as 43-year-old Dunieski Castillo-Leyva.

During their investigation, detectives with APD learned that Leyva and two other companions responded to a sexually oriented ad on Backpage. Leyva and his companions drove to an apartment for the transaction.

During the transaction, a violent argument began with services were not received.

Leyva and his companions fled the apartment. According to police, Leyva ran to his truck and got into the driver's seat. Leyva started his pickup truck and began to back out when 17-year-old Julian Juan Medrano, who was associated with the apartment, ran to the front of Leyva's truck.

Medrano fired one round into Leyva's pickup truck, killing him.

The truck was still in gear and rolled back, striking several vehicles before coming to a complete stop.

Additional charges against others involved are expected as detectives continue to investigate.

This is a developing story and will be updated with more information as it becomes available.
