HOUSTON (FOX 26) - Rigoberto A. Caballero Escobar, 35, has been charged with murder and three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in the case of a woman who was struck by a vehicle and killed in southeast Houston.
Dixa Rios, 38, died on Sunday morning after she was struck by a Ford F-150 on Telephone Road near McHenry Street. Adan Salgado, 36, Celso Velasquez, 32, and Maneesh Roberts, 46, were taken to hospitals with possible broken bones after they were also struck.
Homicide detectives say Escobar, Rios' ex-boyfriend, ran over the woman at least three times near JoJo's Club. Escobar was arrested on an unrelated driving while intoxicated charge about 40 minutes after Rios was killed and the other men were injured.
Investigators spoke with Escobar who admitted to intentionally striking Rios with his truck.
“Apparently there was maybe one or two people out here who were telling this suspect after he ran over her the first time, 'hey stop stop stop there is somebody underneath your car', and apparently the suspect did not care, threw the vehicle in reverse and ran over her again," says Sergeant Joshua Horn with the Houston Police Department. "He goes on to the other side of the roadway, drives northbound for whatever reason makes a U-turn and then strikes are female victim again as it’s traveling northbound down the roadway."
Standing very close to where the scene happened just hours before, Alanna Garza is mourning the loss of her friend. “I’m so devastated because she was like my sister,” says Garza.
