HOUSTON (FOX 26) - "There are some communities in our city that have been underserved and under sourced for decades," said Mayor Sylvester Turner. The mayor is doing something about it in a program called the Complete Communities Initiative.
He's picked five communities to be part of a pilot program that began last April. "Then we will select another five and go from there until we've reached every community throughout the city," Mayor Turner said.
On Wednesday night residents of Acres Homes met with members of various city departments to discuss priority projects like housing and how to get quality grocery stores and other retailers to build in Acres Homes which is historically under resourced.
"The first thing we do is listen to the community," said planning and development director Patrick Walsh. "We want to make sure all the voices are heard so we understand what the interests of the community are, what's their vision where do they want to go in five, 10, 20 years."
The mayor stresses this is not about just talking about changing communities like Acres Homes but doing something about it. He says he hopes to have long term projects implemented by spring of next year.
