Malala Day celebrating Malala Yousafzai's 20th birthday

Malala Yousafzai is celebrating her birthday with new friends in Iraq.

Born on July 12, 1997 in Pakistan, Malala Yousafzai started advocating for women's rights in education since 2008. The young girl was also critical of the Taliban menace in the region that has for decades targeted women's progress.  In 2014, at the age of 17, Malala became the youngest-ever recipient of the Nobel Peace prize

The 17-year-old Pakistani campaigner, who lives in Britain where she received medical treatment following an assassination attempt by the Taliban in 2012, was jointly awarded the Nobel peace prize with Kailash Satyarthi from India. Chair of the Nobel Committee Thorbjorn Jagland made the announcement in Oslo, commending Malala for her 'heroic struggle' as a spokesperson for girls' rights to education.
