Suspect wanted by U.S. Marshals arrested following standoff in Kannapolis

KANNAPOLIS, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - A man wanted by U.S. Marshals is in custody after a lengthy standoff with law enforcement agencies at a Kannapolis motel Friday.

Christopher Vaughn, 33, was arrested at the Motel 6, located on Lane Street just off Interstate 85, after a 3-hour standoff with authorities. According to the U.S. Marshal Service, Vaughn had an extensive criminal history and was wanted for parole violation stemming from a conviction of child abuse inflicting serious injury in 2013.

Probation Officers had attempted to arrest Vaughn on March 20 in Granville County, but he escaped out a window after assaulting officers and throwing a computer monitor threw the glass, authorities said.

U.S. Marshals tell FOX 46 that they were attempting to bring Vaughn into custody when the standoff began. Vaughn reportedly refused to leave his room. Kannapolis police arrived on scene to prevent anyone else from entering the building.

Witnesses told FOX 46 that a woman in her 20s was with Vaughn and that they were barricaded inside the room. They said the suspect would not let the woman leave the room. After about two and a half hours, authorities said they could hear the two arguing and that the woman appeared at the window visibly distressed. U.S. Marshals were able to break down the door and separate the two, a witness told FOX 46.

Vaughn, who retreated to the bathroom, eventually surrendered after 15 minutes and was taken into custody, authorities said. The woman, who was not identified, was not arrested.

A K9 unit was also brought on scene.

In addition to his charge of parole violation, Vaughn is also facing charges out of Granville County for assault inflicting serious injury on law enforcement, injury to real property and injury to personal property.
