MLK's legacy honored at special dinner for families in need

HOUSTON (FOX 26) - Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream was brought to life at the Power  4 Life Ministries special event a Power of Freedom Concert and Dinner for less fortunate families from 3rd and 5th Ward communities.  Families enjoyed a special dinner and entertainment in King’s honor at the Crowne Plaza in Southwest Houston.

Families joined in praise as people celebrated not one but two kings: the heavenly father and the late Martin Luther King Jr.  Inside the ambiance of a ballroom, 9 year old Mariyah Calvin says she felt special.

“It means a lot to me since I'm 9 years old. I really haven't been to a place like this and this really gives me joy and laughter,” Mariyah said.

Those with Power 4 Life Ministries say they wanted the families they serve to experience a night of luxury.  The spiritual organization is often helping these families get back on their feet.

“They have given us food, clothes, and one time I didn't have a bed for my son. They came and gave him a whole new bed set, sheets, blanket,” Jacqueline Barnes said.

Pastor Catherine Smith, founder of Power 4 Life Ministries, says giving back is what Dr. King stood for.

“One of the things that he really stood for was liberty, freedom for all for all mankind, freedom from the past,” Pastor Smith said.

Even little Mariyah, wise beyond her years, knows all about his legacy.

“I know he fought for us, and he gave a speech and the government actually listened  to him,” Mariyah Calvin said.
