Armed, suicidal man forces Barbers Hill ISD lockdown

- Barbers Hill Independent School District was locked down after a suicidal man with a weapon was seen near campuses. Baytown police say that man was taken into custody before 2:30 p.m. Wednesday and taken to the Mont Belvieu Police Department station.

The man approached a vehicle with a gun in his hand when police released a canine officer who helped apprehend him. Baytown police told FOX 26 News that negotiators had attempted to communicate with that man at around 9 a.m. Wednesday.
Mont Belvieu police had responded to a report of a suicidal person who had walked southbound in the Eagle Creek subdivision in a section under construction. When officers arrived to a vacant area of grass where the man was at, he fired at least two gunshots. The man, who is hearing impaired, then began sitting on a curb and refused to move..

All the children and staff remained in safe condition throughout the negotiations.

Barbers Hill ISD released the following statement on the situation:

We have a dangerous situation progressing involving an armed and suicidal man in a field 400-500 yards across Eagle Drive from our campuses. We have locked down appropriate buildings and all police agencies are on the scene and managing the situation. All of our children and staff are safe and we are taking these actions to be overly cautious. Traffic is limited on Eagle Drive. We will notify you of all changes as they occur. I have complete confidence in Chief Widner and Chief Blasdel in containing this situation. The affected campuses in lockdown are Middle School South, Elementary South, and Kindergarten/Primary.
