Each week, Fox 26's Angela Chen checks out a restaurant that you might want to put on your culinary radar, in a series we call "So We Eat On". This week, she takes us to a spot in Houston's East End that transports you to the Yucatan. The restaurant is so popular, it has never had to advertise in the nearly 50 years in has been in business.
The secret to the success of Merida are the secret recipes that this family-owned place has passed down for 4 generations. Current owner Rafael Acosta says his grandmother taught his mother how to cook the regional dishes they serve up. While he still owns the restaurant, the next generation is ready to take over. His daughter is currently serving as the chef and his son is running the business side of Merida.
Not only is the food delicious, it is also inexpensive. You can fill up on their jumbo breakfast taco for $3.25.
