HARRIS COUNTY (FOX 26) - The men and women of Harris County Precinct 4 Constable's office are now heavily armed.
Constable Mark Herman says it is just another tool for his deputies.
The deputy constables are being trained to use AR1-5s.
Herman says he has purchased 40 of them with accessories at a cost of $40,000 -- money left over from last year's budget.
So why is so much fire power needed on the streets of northwest Harris County?
The Constable says he has four school districts to look after, and in this current atmosphere, his deputies must be ready for any and everything.
Herman says in addition to the 40 new rifles, the officers are being trained to use some older AR-15s, which were already out on the streets with his department.
But what do the people think about the semi-automatic rifle being used by the deputies? Depends on who you ask.
Paul Richardson says, "I think they have to be armed with whatever would be adequate."
Deputies will use these weapons during obvious times like active shootings, but the Constable says the deputies must follow strict guidelines, like locking up the weapons after the end of a shift.
