Fmr HPD officer charged in deadly DWI crash found dead

- A former Houston Police officer charged in a deadly head-on collision has been found dead.

33-year-old, James Combs, was charged with intoxication manslaughter.

Back in August 2016, Officer Combs was driving on Beechnut and Westmore when he drove his Chevy Tahoe into a Corvette. The investigation shows that Combs veered into the other driver’s lane when they collided.

Brian Manring was the driver of the Corvette, and was pronounced dead at the scene. When officers arrived at the scene, Combs told them he was an off duty police officer. But when asked to do a breathalyzer test, Combs refused and later gave a blood sample.

The blood sample results came back positive for alcohol content, and Combs was charged with intoxication manslaughter. He paid his bond which was set at $100,000.

Manring was a 36-year-old single father with an 8-year-old daughter.

Officer Combs was with HPD for six years.
