Katy Thanksgiving feast feeds thousands

KATY, Texas (FOX 26) - Katy is growing and so are the hearts of the people who live there. Eleven churches collaborated on the Katy Community Thanksgiving Feast, that this year, is bigger than ever.

"I think this is the most we've ever had dining in this year. The numbers keep growing," said Kathy Fraser from Holy Covenant United Methodist Church. "We're serving around 1,400 meals today."

700 of those meals were served and enjoyed at First United Methodist Church of Katy, which is hosting the event. But 500 meals were picked up "to-go," and another 200 meals were delivered to homes.

"Every town has a community that's less fortunate, or has been effected by layoffs, or whatever. They need help," said Mark Wiley of Grace Fellowship United Methodist Church Katy. "We all need help at some point in our lives."

This 5th annual event offered much more than great food and fellowship.

"We have new coats, blankets, canned goods, diapers, and wipes," Fraser said, "and bibles in English and Spanish that are being given free."

No one left empty handed, unless their take-home items were being carried for them by scouts from Boy Scout Troop 557.

Boy Scout Ali Partovi told FOX 26, "It feels good helping people on Thanksgiving."

Axl Smith added that he and Ali had been working together all morning. "It's been really great. It's something we take for granted.

We asked Art Hernandez from the host church if he would be going home to celebrate Thanksgiving with his family.

"This is it," he said with a big smile. "This is our celebration we enjoy doing it and we've done it downtown here for 5 years. It's a great tradition."
