A thief was force-fed more than 40 bananas by police in India to recover a stolen necklace he had swallowed.
The 25-year-old man had denied snatching the gold chain from a woman on the street in Mumbai, but X-rays indicated he had consumed it in a bid to conceal his crime.
Initially, an enema was administered to try and retrieve the jewelry.
But when this failed, officers resorted to a more unorthodox technique after deciding an operation would be too expensive.
"He was fed more than 40 bananas throughout the day," said Mumbai police senior inspector Shankar Dhanavade.
"Eventually the chain was found. We made him wash and disinfect it."
