HOUSTON (FOX 26) - These 10 men are all convicted killers who will be released from prison within the next few years.
“They are what I generally call the worst of the worst,” said crime victims advocate Andy Kahan. “Because keep in mind all of them have been denied parole repeatedly.”
So then how are these guys and hundreds like them getting out of prison early? They were convicted between 1977 and 1987 so they still reap the benefits of the state’s, now abolished, mandatory release law.
“Any violent offender from murderers, rapists to serial killers if you committed the crime in that time frame you’re walking,” Kahan said. “No if and or buts.”
And some of them are just months away from freedom like Neil Wayne Higginbotham, who murdered an associate minister at a downtown Houston church.
This summer Eddie Maxie Houston will be released. He murdered an off duty Harris County sheriff’s deputy.
In all, 650 dangerous criminals will be free due to mandatory release statewide.
In just the next 5 years, 106 of them will be released to Houston. 58 more will call Dallas home.
In just two years, the first serial killer will get out due to mandatory release, convicted baby killer Genene Jones.
“Right now she is scheduled to walk out of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice around March of 2018,” said Kahan.
Jones will be free after serving just 31 years of her 99 year sentence.
“That’s not even one year for every child she is credited for murdering,” Kahan said. “That’s unprecedented that’s never happened before in our country’s history.”
