Inmate in custody after escape from Galveston County Jail

The Galveston County Sheriff's Office confirms that Alex Washington, who was able to slip past officers late on Saturday night, was apprehended at around 8 p.m. Sunday near the Bolivar Peninsula. Washington switched arm bands with another inmate who had posted a $100,000 bond. He was serving a jail sentence for an August 2015 bank robbery and possession of a firearm, a felony offense.

Washington eluded the jail staff at around 11:20 p.m. Saturday night and law enforcement officers learned of the switch around one hour later. Three other people are being questioned about the incident.

Galveston County Sheriff Henry Trochesset says this is the craziest escape stunt he's ever seen and the Office is already taking steps to make sure this never happens again.

"We're going to look at all the procedures," adds Sheriff Trochesset. "I have two investigations actively going on right now -- the process in which individuals are bonded out and looked at before they are released."
