(FOX 26) - Deputies say a homeowner in north Liberty County found a human skull in their front yard on Friday evening.
The homeowner told investigators they believed the skull was brought from the surrounding wooded area into their yard by their pet dog.
Heavy rains postponed a search of the surrounding area until Monday morning. Texas EquuSearch and the Liberty County Sheriff's Office Mounted Posse assisted in the search of the woods surrounding the home. The sheriff's office says conditions in the woods made searching difficult due to standing water and mud.
No additional remains have been located.
Investigators say the skull appears to have been exposed to weather conditions for several years. Due to the condition of the skull, authorities say it is not yet possible to determine if the remains washed up from a shallow grave or if the individual was, at some point, on top of the ground.
Investigators say it is possible the remains were carried into the area from a distant location by wildlife or flood waters that hit the area over the past several years.
The remains will be examined and the investigation continues.
