Houston Muslim Community on Edge

In the early morning hours Sunday, Dr. Arslan Tajamull was on his way to morning prayers at his mosque on Bintliff in SW Houston, when three men shot him.

He's recovering at Ben Taub.   Houston Police are still looking for the gunman, and say the shooting was NOT a hate crime. HPD is calling it an attempted robbery. Nevertheless this event and verified anti-Muslim hate crimes across the country have Houston Muslims nervous.

That's why Christians, Muslims, doctors, lawyers and activists gathered at Houston's Council on American Islamic Relations. Whether a hate crime or not, the shooting was a catalyst for asking mosques to increase their security.

"We just circulated an email making sure they contact their police department to increase patrolling and hiring private security," explained Iman Waleed Basyyouni of Clear Lake Islamic Center.
