HOUSTON (FOX 26) - Houston Police Department, Harris County Sheriff's Office, other local law enforcement agencies and Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner participated in the 34th Annual National Night Out event throughout our area.
The campaign is about uniting neighbors, introducing residents to law enforcement, and a chance for the people to take back their streets from crime. There was food and music which added to the block party feel, and many activities for the kids, but also a chance for them to interact with our police officers.
Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo says, "it's all about building relationships and you know in a city like this, it's such a diverse city with people from all over the world, and some of these people come from places where they don't really trust the police. We have to work much harder to build trust because we all have a collective interest in people trusting us so we can keep people safe."
One thing that neighbors and law enforcement agreed on was that they need to have more events like this to bring the community together.
