SERJobs Workforce Opportunity Center opens in southeast Houston

As part of a joint effort, Harris County Judge Ed Emmett, City of Houston Housing and Community Development director Tom McCasland and SERJobs chief executive officer Sheroo Mukhtiar announced a strategic plan on Tuesday to address the increased need for more skilled labor to assist in recovery efforts in the Houston area as a result of Hurricane Harvey.

The news conference also included a ribbon cutting ceremony at the newly-opened 22,000 square foot Workforce Opportunity Center, the culmination of an $11 million project that included public and philanthropic funding. The facility will serve as the SERJobs headquarters, direct client service and training facility including, NCCER CORE Construction, which can place trained construction workers within three weeks.

The Workforce Opportunity Center on 1710 Telephone Road in southeast Houston will also feature a Career Café, the first in Houston, that brings together job seekers and opportunities for mid-level skilled employment.

The next phase for the SERJobs capital campaign will be a 25,000 square foot training facility, which will be known as the Workforce Training Center.

SERJobs, a nonprofit community organization, was founded in 1965 through the combined efforts of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), the G.I. Forum, and the Department of the Navy.
