Helping women who lost everything following Harvey

- Many Houston-area residents who returned to work after Harvey would not have been able to do so without the help of the non-profit organization Dress For Success.

Hundreds of women who lost everything following Hurricane Harvey have been through one particular Upper Kirby District boutique where there is no cash register.  In fact, at the Dress For Success store, shoppers typically pay only with a smile.

”Dress For Success has been a very great life saver for me,” says Alesha Green, who escaped her flooded home with not much more than what she was wearing. Shortly after the floodwaters receded, Green also lost her car when another driver bypassed a red light and slammed into the vehicle she was driving.

”It's emotional because not only do I have myself, I have three children and they were looking at me like, 'What are we going to do?'” Green didn't have an answer. She didn't even know what she would wear to work until someone told her about Dress For Success.

”I was able to get twenty outfits, two pair of shoes and toiletries,” explains Green with a smile.

Dress For Success also provided her children with backpacks and gift cards for uniforms.

”It's very hard for me to ask for things, but sometimes you have to put your pride to the side, especially when you have children,” adds Green.

”Any woman who was working at the time of Hurricane Harvey, she can contact us and we will supply her with eight professional attire items,” explains Dress For Success veteran outreach manager Alesha Walker.  Because Dress For Success has helped so many women after they were devastated by Harvey, now they need your help to restock their shelves.

”Handbags and shoes, that's our greatest need right now,” adds Walker. Plus-sized clothing items are also needed. “We take donations Monday through Friday from 9:30 to 4. We actually have a convenient drop-off area on the side of our building, so if you pull up and ring the buzzer, someone will come out and assist you.”

Donations are also accepted on the first and second Saturday of the month from 9:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. Your kindness can give a working woman in the Houston area with a large part of her life back with one simple shopping trip that's as special as the community where the store stands in the Upper Kirby district.

“We treat every woman with dignity and respect," says Walker with a smile. "She can expect to come here and feel welcome and feel cared for in a professional environment.”
