Saturday Night Live star Leslie Jones battled a deluge of tweets with racist and sexually explicit harassment that got so bad, Twitter's CEO had to personally step in last night.

A hashtag emerged asking Twitter to ban Milo Yiannopolous, known as @Nero, a British journalist who calls himself the most fabulous super villain on the internet. He'd posted a review of Jones' film Ghostbusters that many blamed for triggering the onslaught of accusations.

While Yiannopolous claims he did nothing but post his review, he does have a history of being associated with Gamer Gate, a community local blogger Taryn Gray say has become notorious for attacking women online. It's something they she sees happen all the time.

Last year, Twitter launched it's Safety Center, which they say was a collaboration with online safety experts who continuously help them to promote good digital citizenship.

In a statement from Twitter, they commented on Leslie Jones' situation saying:

At the time of this story, @Nero's account was still active.

Leslie Jones last tweeted at 1:20 AM saying, "I leave Twitter tonight with tears and a very sad heart. All this cause I did a movie. You can hate the movie but the s*** I got today...wrong"
