9/11 survivor also survives Las Vegas shooting

-

Mike Dempsey was at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas on October 1. He survived the shooting that night, 16 years after another close call: The 9/11 attacks.

Dempsey was in the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. He escaped after the first plane hit, but was taken to the hospital with a fractured skull after being trampled. The memory of people running for their lives came rushing back in Las Vegas.

He was outside by the pool when he heard what sounded like fireworks. Gun shots rained down 32 floors above his head and, he told FOX 46, that’s when “all hell broke loose.”

“I was right under where he was firing so that was probably the scariest part,” he said. “Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined this incident could have happened. But unfortunately it could happen anywhere, anytime.”

He says he ran through the casino, saw someone shot, and was put on lockdown for several hours.

Having lived through it, he considers it a terrorist attack. But he does have hope.

“It’s a devastating incident,” he continued, “and really a reflection that we need to have change and really do something. First, help the victims and survivors but also really make some to change out this, and make some good come out of this horrific event.”
