Fort Bend ISD high school student arrested after being found with gun on campus

A Fort Bend ISD student was arrested Tuesday after a gun was found in the pocket of his jacket while on campus.

Travis High School sent a letter home to parents saying that an administrator noticed that DeMonte Ziegler, 17, looked to be in possession of a possible controlled substance and immediately contacted a school resource officer to investigate further.

The officer then found a discarded jacket Ziegler had on and located a small handgun in the jacket pocket. Ziegler was arrested and will also face appropriate disciplinary action.

The full letter sent home to parents can be seen below.

Dear Parents,

The safety of our students is a top priority at Travis High School. In an effort to keep you informed, I want to make you aware of an incident that happened at Travis High School today.

This afternoon, an alert administrator noticed that a student was in possession of a possible controlled substance and immediately contacted our school resource officer to investigate. Shortly after the student was escorted into our administration office, an administrator noticed the student had discarded a jacket. Upon further investigation by the police officer, the officer found a small handgun in the jacket.

The student has been arrested on very serious charges that include possessing a controlled substance and having a weapon in a place where weapons are prohibited. The student will also face appropriate disciplinary action.

Please be assured that we take any incident involving student safety very seriously, and as a precaution, extra officers were on campus during dismissal this afternoon.
