TAMINA, Texas (FOX 26) - Montgomery County deputies are quick to say murders are extremely rare in the small African American community of Tamina. But in one day two lives have been lost.
Investigators say 23-year-old Jaquise Williams and his cousin 24-year-old Akeem Russell were found shot to death in the house they shared on Bimms Drive.
Darrell Phillips is William's stepfather. He says, "he was loving and would give you the shirt off his back and he was just at my house...it is just crazy. "
Deputies say Williams and Russell were found around 9 a.m. when a relative went to check on them. They hadn't been heard from since Wednesday.
What's also tragic is Jaquise's 2-year-old daughter was in the house with them during the shooting. She was found alive but she sat there with her father's body alone overnight.
Investigators are still trying to figure out who's responsible for the murders. One of the victims was found on the porch, the other in a bedroom.
Tamina is a tight-knit community where deputies say most time the families police themselves.
But this double murder is shocking to those who call the area home like Carolyn Davis. She says, "They don't deserve this what happened to them...they're not bad kids at all. "
