Deputy shoots suspect who brought AK-47 to confront girlfriend at party

On a Saturday evening in north Harris County, hundreds of people stood outside of a house party on Reeveston Road as Harris County Sheriff's Office deputies investigated a crime scene.

“We came out here because it’s a pool party we have every year," says Shannon Oliver, who was trying to get into the party. "It’s for Ron and Munchie birthday party and then all the sudden, we get here and we here and a disturbance that someone’s been shot, so it’s very upsetting, especially when you pay the money to come out and have a great time. It’s summertime, people got babysitters, you know, we spend money, this is ridiculous!”

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez says deputies were originally responding to a reported disturbance but when they arrived to the location, that all changed.

“As deputies arrived, they did observe a male with an AK-47 standing by his vehicle," says Sheriff Gonzalez. "The male began pointing the weapon at them. They gave verbal commands and the male was not responsive to the commands, so one of the deputies did discharge his weapon, striking the male.”

The man who was shot was taken to a hospital. Preliminary reports say his injuries are not life-threatening. Sheriff Gonzalez says he believes the man came to the party to confront the woman he was in a relationship with.

“As you can hear the music in the background, there was an ongoing party happening, pretty large and the male came because a woman that he is having a relationship with, either girlfriend or something, we don’t know, that was at this party, he wanted to confront her and he came heavily armed,” describes Sheriff Gonzalez.

“The fact that they won’t let anybody in, that makes it even worse because OK, we know something happened, but it at least let someone in so we can make sure all of our loved ones are OK,” adds Oliver.
