BAYTOWN, Texas (FOX 26) - A father was arrested for allegedly leaving his 18-month-old baby in a hot car while shopping inside a Baytown grocery store.
According to Baytown police, 24-year-old Gene Curry left his daughter in the car for approximately 18 minutes. The Baytown Fire Department responded to a report of a child life in a car around 11:44 a.m. on May 16.
Police say fire department personnel on scene did not immediately see the child but noticed a blanket covering a car seat move and heard the child cry, adding to the concern for the child being left alone inside the hot vehicle, thus forcing fire personnel to make entry into the locked vehicle and remove the child.
Police say the father exited they store while they were on scene, and he said he had only been in the store for approximately ten minutes. After reviewing security footage, police say they found the father had actually been in the store approximately 18 minutes.
In an effort to determine how hot the car was when the baby was inside, police say officers placed a thermometer in the vehicle with the door closed for 18 minutes and found the temperature had risen to 112 degrees while the temperature was 90 degrees outside.
Curry has been charged with with endangering a child. Police say EMS determined the child did not need further medical treatment and the baby was released to a family member.
