Catholics in Houston gathered for "Blue Mass" on Saturday to bless the Houston Police Department and Harris County Sheriff's Office. The mass was held at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Downtown Houston.

The Blue Mass tradition dates back more than eight decades, according to the church. It was first celebrated at St. Patrick's in Washington D.C.

"It's an extra layer of protection," said Sgt. Stewart Red of the Houston Police Department K9 Unit. "They bless all the dogs, horses, each vehicle, and all of the officers and deputies that go along with those vehicles."

Following the service, community members interacted with law enforcement. pet K9s and horses, and explored law enforcement vehicles.

Family and friends attending the event say they hope the blessings will protect their loved ones as they work to protect the city of Houston.
