Boy, 8, dies of gun shot wound in north Liberty County

An 8-year-old boy has died after being shot in the chest Saturday night, deputies say. According to the Liberty County Sheriff's Office, family member were shooting at tin cans at the family's residence near the Plum Grove area when the boy was shot.

Deputies say say the father, the 8-year-old boy, and the father's juvenile nephew were using a very old .22 caliber semi-automatic rifle with no trigger guard to take turns shooting at the tin cans. LCSO says during the initial investigation the father told deputies the rifle was being handled by someone, and when he turned his back, he heard a gunshot and his son had been shot.

The boy was flown to Memorial Hermann Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The investigation is ongoing. No charges have been filed at this time.
