HOUSTON (FOX 26) - Battleship Texas will remain closed to the public on Friday, Nov. 11, and Saturday, Nov. 12 because of repairs. The attraction will reopen on Sunday, Nov. 13 starting at 10 a.m. and closing for the day at 5 p.m. Visitors can spend the day aboard the vessel with free admission as a result of the flooding incident caused by corrosion of the ship's hull, according to a statement released by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
A "1945 Victory Dance" event, scheduled to take place on Saturday night on the deck of the battleship, will be relocated to on shore beside the ship. The First Texas Volunteers are organizing the event.
TPWD released the following statement on Saturday:
Last week, a breach in the outer hull caused the ship to take on more water than normal. Repairs began this week, and crews have had to remove patches that had previously been installed. This part of the repairs allowed the ship to take on more water, causing a pronounced list to starboard. Out of an abundance of caution for the safety of our visitors, public access to the Battleship will be suspended through Saturday.
Following a similar major flooding event in 2012, TPWD installed more than 20 pumps throughout the ship to control continual minor leaks and help in the event of more catastrophic flooding. During this event, the volume of water surpassed the capacity of the pumps. However, once marine repair experts secured the most critical portion of the patch in place late Friday evening, the pumps were able to stabilize the ship. Repair work is expected to continue through Monday.
As the last remaining U.S. battleship to have served in both World Wars, Battleship TEXAS and
