HOUSTON (FOX 26) - “This case has more twists and bizarre turns than I’ve seen in any of my cases over the years,” said attorney Anthony Osso. “And I’ve handled many cases.”
Not long after Deputy Darren Goforth was gunned down last August, authorities shocked the public by saying Goforth’s alleged mistress was at the scene of the deadly encounter.
Weeks later, Harris County Sergeant Craig Clopton was fired for having a relationship with the slain deputy’s mistress.
“He’s going to bring the love back to police departments all over the world, not just here in Texas,” Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy Mark Deleon told Fox 26 just a week after Goforth’s murder.
Now Deleon is out of a job.
The sheriff’s department says Deleon also had an inappropriate relationship with the mistress and was terminated for being untruthful about it to internal affairs investigators.
“The last firing doesn’t come as any shock to me. I was aware of the individual, I was aware of the relationship,” said Osso.
Osso is representing Shannon Miles, Goforth’s alleged killer whose been declared incompetent to stand trial.
“There’s indications that there may be some other people involved with the witness but we don’t know yet,” Osso said.
Sheriff Ron Hickman wouldn’t speak directly about Deleon but made his displeasure known over this latest embarrassment for his department.
“We hire from the human race they will stumble and make mistakes,” Hickman said. “When they do I think it’s appropriate that we take action consistent with the seriousness of the offense.”
Deputy Deleon had no comment on his termination according to a statement by his attorney.
That statement also says Deleon will be appealing his firing.
