Abandoned cars pulled from Brays Bayou

- One stolen car down, and possibly 20 more to go, in an effort to pull abandoned cars out of a local bayou.

The Harris County flood control district along with the City of Houston have launched a pilot program to pull abandoned cars from Brays Bayou. They're hoping it will solve crimes that have been on the books for years.

Two cars were removed from the waterway today.

The first was a 1987 Buick Regal stolen back in September 1998, and the second was a rust colored Hyundai.

This  effort is part of a $49,500 pilot program to see how well it works.

That amount will allow Apple Towing to pull at least 24 cars from a half mile stretch of the bayou near Old Spanish Trail and Wheeler Avenue.

Houston city councilman Michael Kubosh says the city is ready to commit an additional $225,000 to continue to pull the cars out of the bayou.

This pilot program by the county is expected to run until 24 of the 33 vehicles have been removed.
