HOUSTON (FOX 26) - Health Fit Pharmacy on Yale is now open. Owner Arthur Billings is happy to help folks in the Heights with their prescription medication needs.
“We just got here and we're trying to build a business,” he said.
But it hasn't been easy because when his doors close, thieves are trying to help themselves to the controlled substances inside.
“It’s just frustrating,” said Billings.
The pharmacy has been broken into four times in four months. Surveillance video captures as many as 4 people breaking right through the back walls, through steel doors, and even breaking into the vacant suite next door just to then break into the pharmacy.
“’Your building has taken a beating?’ Bad beating,” said Billings.
One of the men even uses a power saw to crack the safe open while they watch the clock after the alarm sounds to get out before cops arrive.
“They do have the technology where they are listening to see when police get the call,” said Billings.
Despite making it inside four times, amazingly the bandits have only made off with a small amount of drugs during the initial break-in. Billings has spent thousands of dollars reinforcing the walls with steel and putting metal cages and shutters around each door.
“’So you're out 10 grand because some thugs want to come and break into your store?’ Pretty much, yeah. “So does that make you mad?’ More than mad,” said Billings.
Now, if and when they come back, Billings hopes the building can hold up.
“They're criminals and they're smart. If they put as much effort into the design of a new product or something, or getting a job, they probably would be successful people, but they chose the other route,” he said.
He’s hired a Houston police officer to stand guard at the pharmacy during business hours.
