A seven-year-old boy was taken to a children’s hospital in Miami in handcuffs on January 26 after allegedly attacking his teacher.
A video uploaded to Facebook by a friend of the child’s mother shows the young boy being taken out of the back of a car by a police officer and led into the pediatric trauma center of Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. The young boy was reportedly detained under The Baker Act, which allows for an involuntary examination of persons displaying signs of mental illness.
According to an incident report prepared by the Miami-Dade School’s Police, the boy misbehaved after a teacher told him not to play with his food. The boy then allegedly “attacked the teacher by repeatedly punching her on the back” and “grabbing her hair.”
The boy’s father, Rolando Fuentes, maintained that his son was being egged on by other students. He told local media that he knew his son had acted badly, but that the police officer’s actions were “out of hand”.
In a Facebook post Mercy Alvarez, the child’s mother, she said that she had “uncovered a Pandora’s box,” claiming that “hundreds of children… have been victims of the same procedure.”
