Terrifying surveillance video: Security guard murdered on the job

- A family is in mourning this holiday season after a security guard was gunned down on the job.

The surveillance video is horrifying. Two men with guns can clearly be seen on camera walking right up and ambushing 71-year-old security guard Saul Cruz at a convenience store on Anderson near Hiram Clarke.

After the gunmen run away, Cruz's patrol car sits so eerily still at the Phillips 66 Anderson Market in southwest Houston, someone calls 911.

“We got reports of a suspicious vehicle,” explains Sgt. Arnold Semmelrock with the Houston Police Department.  Taking a closer look, Houston police detectives find both the driver and passenger windows of the security officer's car shattered from gunfire.

“I heard the gunshots” explains one resident.

The security guard was discovered slumped inside the vehicle shot to death.  Police say both men opened fire on Cruz with no prior confrontation and then robbed the 71-year-old.  The killers were wearing purple pants and purple hoodies.

“It's an older guy.  He's up in age.  I don't think he deserved that.  He didn't deserve that.  He was just trying to guard the property,” adds another resident.

“This man has only been here two months and he doesn't bother anybody.  He's a really nice man,” explains resident Devina Hill.

”My wife would come over here and you have people that are drunk trying to talk to my wife and he would stop them and be like leave her alone. He would protect the ladies.  He was a real good guy,” says Rafael Ortega.

Investigators are reviewing surveillance video in hopes of identifying the gunman.

“You took someone's life. He had a family, then Christmas is Friday. That's sad” says one woman.

“It's just sad.  It's just sad and it's too close to Christmas. What about his family? I don't understand it,” adds Hill.

Just before the gunshots rang out at 4:10 a.m., Angelica Hernandez says she heard a loud noise outside [her] house.

"As soon as I opened the curtain, they took off. They sped off in an SUV.  They had a screwdriver trying to open my vehicle,” Hernandez explains.

Residents say the security guard's wife was scheduled to fly in from El Salvador to spend Christmas with him, but instead of traveling on this day, she got word her husband was murdered.
