Kids' Meals feeds hundreds of families in need for Thanksgiving

- Thousands of families here in Houston struggle knowing where their next meal is coming from, let alone providing a hearty Thanksgiving Day feast.  Now a local non-profit is on a mission to make sure families have what they need for the holidays.  Kids’ Meals says there are 88,000 families who have young children they can’t afford to feed.

A typical day for Kids’ Meals looks like them dropping off 2,500 lunches for children preschool age to kindergarten.  Now over the next couples of days before Thanksgiving these families will get everything from canned goods to turkeys.  For many this is their only meal.

“It's just joy. It's so exciting to see how happy they are. How anxious they are in order for us to get there,” Executive Director Cristina Vetrano said.

Kids’ Meals will hand out 1,500 turkeys.  The majority of their families are Hispanic and black and each year the need becomes greater,

“There are more and more neighborhoods that have hungry families. That lost their jobs for one reason or another . Their grandparents are taking care of their grandchildren,” Vetrano said.

“They're 5 mins from here, 10 mins from affluent neighborhoods so it means so much to them. It's hope. It's peace of mind for the parents that their children are at least going to get one meal a day,” Vetrano said.

But what really keeps Kids’ Meals up at night is figuring out a long term way to end hunger.

“What concerns me is to be able to find ways to get families out of this cycle of poverty and it's hard to climb out, and another piece Kids’ Meals is working towards is actually take resources directly to the families,” Vetrano said.
