HOUSTON (FOX 26) - It was overcast so Delores Lawton wasn't wearing shades to block the sun but to hide her tears.
"I really don't want anybody to see that I'm grieving behind these shades but I am," Lawton said.
On July 16 of last year Lawton lost her only son, 44-year-old Derek Lawton Sr.
"He was amazing he was my heart," said Lawton's daughter Dereka. "I miss him to death."
"He was a good guy. He never started violence with anybody he loved everybody, everybody was a friend," said Derek Lawton Jr.
Lawton's daughter and son also struggle with not knowing who killed their father or why.
The only witness to the murder is Lawton's sister Tiani Lawton.
She is estranged from her mother.
"When I came to the scene she was stand offish, I guess is the word," Delores Lawton said. "I didn't ruffle any feathers because I was distraught I still couldn't believe my son was gone."
Tiani Lawton won't talk to her mother about her brother's murder but she did talk to us.
"I was asleep and I just woke up to a gunshot," Tiani Lawton said.
We asked her how many gunshots did she hear.
"I only heard one," she replied.
"If you're only 6 feet away from your brothers bedroom how come you only heard one shot," Delores Lawton said.
Tiani Lawton told us two men wearing ski masks broke into the apartment and took nothing but her brother's life. Did they say anything?
"I mean basically once I came out they just like you know who are you, " Tiani Lawton said.
Does she have any idea why they shot her brother to death?
"No. I've been gone to prison. I been in prison 10 years. I've only been home for 2 years," Tiani Lawton said.
Crime Stoppers is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to Derek Lawton's killer.
