Historic Barrett Station cemetery damaged by out of control driver

- Volunteers are trying to figure out how much damage was done after someone drove a truck through a historic African American cemetery northeast of Houston.

It happened over the weekend at the Barrett Station Evergreen Cemetery.

A number of headstones were damaged and graves were compromised.

“He hit my brother’s grave. There was a cement platform over it. It’s cracked. And there’s oil all over it like he busted his oil pan. He knocked the headstone off the platform it was sitting in about three feet away next to the fence. And the fence was tore up like the truck might have went through it,” said Janeen Menifee Bellock whose brother is buried at the cemetery.

The sheriff's department says the driver told them he was going too fast and lost control. He was cited for not having a driver's license and failure to drive in a single lane.
